Sr. Staff Designer, Entertainment Design


1.0 General:

This Sr. Staff level design position is 70% art direction for new themes of green-lit preschool entertainment and 20% composing & presenting of pitch decks to Executive Management as well as outside partners & 10% asset & style guide approval. This person is instrumental in creating a vivid and exciting future for our preschool entertainment properties. Reporting to the Director of the Preschool Toy Design Team, this Sr. Staff Designer will interface daily with the TV show producers & the Toy team leads to hash out new ideas that combine the thinking and in-built play features that will make compelling toys and exciting entertainment. This person needs to be a heavy hitter of design skills, as they need to produce compelling visuals that bring the stories to life from the TV show producers.

The Sr. Staff Designer is responsible for relentless driving of creativity to ensure the team is consistently staying on schedule to produce innovative, on-target, on time results. The Sr. Staff Designer helps to prioritize projects and workload in partnership with the Preschool Toy Team and will need to manage outside design resources as needed. The person in this role has excellent communication skills, and an ability to be a compelling storyteller as they pitch new themes and designs. This person will need to act as a creative bridge interfacing with producers in both Toronto and Los Angeles as well as the Toy Design Team. The Sr. Staff Designer will need to be a brand ambassador for several brands at one time, upholding the rules that make each brand unique while driving them where they have never gone before.


2.0 Specific Responsibilities:

  • Lead design of new tentpole themes for Preschool entertainment including Paw Patrol, Rusty Rivets as well as any additional new preschool brands
  • Lead theme & asset design of episode specials for Preschool entertainment
  • Works independently, requires little or no supervision
  • Effectively communicate ideas while working with teams across the globe
  • Has excellent skills to interpret feedback from executives and producers and creatively move forward
  • Consistently maintains a positive attitude and is considered a good role model
  • Delivers innovative ideas that support brand strategy
  • Work with Toy Design Team daily to ensure toy feature thinking is applied to designs
  • Works with Producers of several TV shows to set priorities & schedules
  • Manage design deliverable schedules for multiple entertainment properties
  • Maintain a consistently high level of quality, thoroughness and attention to detail
  • Solicit creative direction from the Toy Team, Execs, Producers, and in some cases the animation studios
  • Pitch new design material regularly internally to Executives and quarterly to external partners
  • Create mood boards and sketches to convey design direction for multiple preschool properties
  • Approvals & overlays for various inbound licensed assets including style guide, publishing, mascots etc.
  • Mentor less experienced designers
  • Keep supervisor advised of work status, work load, problems and progress as related to work assignments
  • Travel for meetings, new theme pitches and for on-site approvals of 3D assets as needed     3.1 Reports to Director of Preschool Toy Design

5.0 Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years in the toy & entertainment industry
  • Experience in both the consumer product and licensing industries
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop as well as digital sketching tools
  • Undergraduate degree in Toy Design, Industrial Design, Transportation Design (BFA) or equivalent
