The Job:

We are seeking an experienced and creative Manager of Electronic Hardware Engineering to take a hands-on leadership role in building innovative products, that come to life, and combine elements of puppetry, mechanisms, electronics, materials, structural, and other forms of engineering. Reporting to the Director of Engineering Innovation, this person will primarily be responsible for electronics development of complex consumer toy products as a Subject Matter Expert in Electrical Engineering within New Product Development.


The role is a key element in creating and transforming conceptual designs and key play patterns into workable electronic proof-of-concepts for both internal demonstration and alignment and for final mass production.  In addition to strong electronics hardware skills, the ideal candidate will possess practical knowledge of human-robot/toy interaction, UI/UX, gameplay design, and other psychological factors that ultimately lead to products that “surprise and delight” the target consumer.


What we can expect from you:

  • Assuming a technical leadership role of Electronics Hardware Engineering within the Engineering Innovation Centre of Excellence (COE) of New Product Development.
  • Mentor and guide Senior and Junior Electrical Engineering team members for strong and smart electronics and hardware design.
  • Foster teams that are collaborative, inclusive, and respectful of each other, leading by example.
  • Lead design of complex electronics systems including schematics, hardware, Electronics Bill of Materials (EBOM), simulations, testing, integration, and other.
  • Manage electronic systems development from concept through to production focused on the consumer experience.
  • Manage Electrical/Electronic engineering work with close cross-functional teams ensuring designs are scalable, cohesive, re-usable, on time and budget.
  • Research new technologies and creative cost-effective applications for existing technologies
  • Design and Evaluate prototypes, pre-production and production samples for function and robustness.
  • Collaborate with Firmware development team on hardware component drivers and libraries.
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance teams on reliability and safety.
  • Provide detailed feedback using solid engineering principles.
  • Documenting and communicating status and challenges for hardware engineering unit in terms of Design, concept, cost and timing.
  • Work effectively with external hardware as well as internal/external software development teams to ensure functionality, performance, scalability, safety and other product requirements.
  • Apply your knowledge of electronics, electrical engineering and architecture in the capacity of a Subject Matter Expert within the company.
  • Help convert ideas/sketches into proof of concept models for electronic hardware.
  • Participate in product brainstorming and help verify, confirm, and/or correct desired concepts, directions.
  • Provide designs which are ready for prototype building and testing iterations with final design for manufacturing in mind (Asia, Mexico, USA, France).
  • Drive productivity and scheduled gains by implementing early design successes for less revisions.

Job Requirements

Who’s a good fit for this team:

Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of both Analog and Digital Design including microprocessors and microcontrollers, amplifiers, radio modules, Bluetooth and Bluetooth low-energy, wide range of analog and digital sensors, DC and servo motors.
  • PCB design, design for EMC, Schematic capture, and simulation using Altium designer or similar
  • Experience in firmware test development and coding.
  • Systematic hardware troubleshooting and debugging experience required.
  • Experienced with Altium designer or similar schematic design, simulation and PCB Layout Tools
  • Experience designing hardware and firmware for Arm-cortex M series microprocessors.
  • Experience with toy-grade MCUs such as General Plus, Nuvoton or Sensory is an asset but not required.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Visio, Word, Excel, etc. is a must.
  • App development skills an asset but not required.
  • Experience working with model shops both within and outside the company

Other Skills:

  • Good lab skills plus a grasp of applied mechanics is an asset.
  • Strong interest in robotics and RC and gadgets, robotic technologies, and consumer electronics.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, multifaceted, and fun environment

  • Demonstrates a "hands-on" team leadership approach to deliver results which are on-spec, on-time, and on-cost.
  • A creative thinker with the ability to come up with ideas “outside of the box”
  • Availability for international travel from time to time to support design, development, and production.
  • Toy experience an asset but not necessary. Consumer product experience is a must.
  • Ability to work effectively with creative professionals (designers and engineers) both within and outside the company
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

You should apply if you have the following:

  • 7+ years hands-on electronics hardware engineering, PCB design, schematics design and simulations, programming, and troubleshooting.
  • Comfortable in an Electrical Engineering leadership role while being completely hands-on while mentoring other team members.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or similar
  • A “tinkerer” a “super-tech” well rounded in applied Hardware and Firmware.
