The Job:

The Manager, Canadian Payroll is responsible for all aspects of Canadian payroll including payroll entry, execution and reporting. This role is expected to be capable of working at multiple levels including but not limited to maintaining all HR data in the Canadian payroll system, produce regular i.e., monthly, quarterly, or annual HR/payroll reports and ad-hoc reporting for all geographies, and management of special projects that support Spin Master HR strategies.  The Manager, Canadian Payroll will partner with key stakeholders i.e. finance, or accounting, acting as a key liaison to support accurate financial reporting.

  • Subject matter expert in Canadian employee tax legislations and ESA
  • Review bi-weekly payroll for Canadian employees
  • Backup US payroll when needed
  • Accountable for processing payroll in a timely and accurate manner
  • Organize, manage, coordinate, and execute necessary administrative activity involving the maintenance and updating of personnel records deemed vital for payroll
  • Independently identify and resolve payroll errors
  • Complete bi-weekly audits on payroll data
  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll process and work with the payroll vendor and the HR team to implement changes
  • Reconcile RRSP, and TFSA remittances to third party providers
  • Stay current with yearly tax requirements regarding changes to provincial, US state and federal laws
  • Respond to inquiries from the labour department’s governing the jurisdictions Spin Master operates
  • Filing of T4’s, T4A’s, T4A-NR and T2200’s
  • Maintain and submit garnishments to third party agencies
  • Reconcile WSIB and Worker’s Compensation remittances and prepare annual returns
  • Prepare and maintain GL entry upload for accounting
  • Work with HR to develop and implement changes to ensure data integrity
  • Process annual bonus and merit increases accurately


Job Requirements

What we can expect from you:

  • Prepare and analyze monthly payroll reports
  • Respond to CRA inquiries
  • Verify payroll reports to ensure accuracy and maintain audit trails for all changes.
  • Prepare documents for year-end auditing by internal and external auditors
  • Partner with finance to establish the annual budget and regular budget tracking/reporting.
  • Run bi-weekly reports from payroll software to audit payroll (GL workbook, RRSP, Employee benefit deductions, etc.)
  • Accurately manage and maintain employee confidential data for budgeting, forecasting and other business reporting needs.
  • Provide guidance and answer payroll related questions initiated by employees

  • This position requires professionalism, good verbal and writing skills, judgment, tact, diplomacy, insight, strong analytical ability, and well developed administrative, organizational and communication skills

You should apply if you have the following:

  • University Degree, preferably in the area of finance or business administration
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience independently managing Canadian and US payroll for 500+ employees (US payroll is optional; the successful candidate will be expected to learn this on the job)
  • Experience using the following systems: TMF Horizon and ADP Workforce Now (US), ADP Small Business Arm & Workday is an asset
