The Job:

The Director of Product Development will lead a team of engineers and project managers, responsible for driving the successful execution of specific Spin Master categories.  The position will provide leadership in implementing best practices and proven techniques for successful product development and design for manufacturing/assembly.  Candidate will work closely with large cross-functional teams (Design, Marketing, Engineering, Quality, Packaging, etc.) to manage development throughout the entire product lifecycle.  Responsibilities include leading and coaching teams, providing escalation management, mapping professional growth of the team, and working with stakeholders to balance business, design, and technical objectives.  The person in this role will be expected to operate in a highly dynamic environment, and consistently drive towards solutions to obtain results.  The desired individual is someone who will bring knowledge and creativity to the position, as well as have the discipline to drive results and champion the new product development processes. 

What we can expect from you:

  • Provide strategic and technical direction to PD team in supporting all product development in the Spin Master East office for on-cost and on-time delivery
  • Optimize resource planning to meet product development/ customer requirements per marketing and design requirements
  • Resolve critical issues for technical, cost, and schedule risks in a timely fashion; work with partners to prioritize and align on respective action plans
  • Translate business, strategic, and financial direction from executives and senior management to functional teams; analyze metrics to track progress and identify issues
  • Provide vision and values for team; drive development of applicable skills for individuals and team; mentor, coach, and guide team ranging from high level problem-solving detailed technical troubleshooting
  • Drive productivity/efficiencies through continuous improvement throughout all aspects of development lifecycle
  • Advise on blue-sky ideation projects and assist with transitioning them to feasible consumer products to drive innovation

  • Ability to employ critical thinking and problem-solving techniques to approach any/all issues.  If unable to resolve certain issues, can demonstrate a willingness to actively engage other support teams to drive towards resolution
  • Strong attention to detail

  • Proactive and enthusiastic in approaching challenges, with a solution-oriented mindset
  • Ability to interpret needs of direct manager, direct reports, cross-functional team/partners, executives, and others to quickly and efficiently address issues or devise action plan  
  • Effectively manage relationships and potential conflict resolution

You should apply if you have the following:

  • 12-15+ years of product engineering experience
  • 5+ years of management experience
  • Bachelors in Engineering or technical field, Master or MBA a plus
  • Consumer goods experience preferred; toys, games, soft goods, and/or outdoor products a plus
  • Demonstrated team building and leadership skills
  • Track record of driving innovative, cost-effective design solutions
  • Deep knowledge of manufacturing
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize competing demands
  • Must be able to travel in North America and internationally to work with partners and support necessary meetings
