The Job:

The Director of Product Development will be responsible for supporting multiple Global Business Units in the technical execution of global product portfolios, from concept through production, and ensuring performance, cost, quality, and schedule adherence.  Candidate must possess a history of strong leadership, deep practical engineering knowledge, and a proven track record for timely project delivery, project management, cost and quality control.  This position will work closely with large cross-functional teams (Design, Marketing, Engineering, Quality, Packaging, etc.) to manage development throughout the entire product lifecycle.  Main responsibilities include working with stakeholders to execute business goals and driving continual process improvement.   The Director will lead a team of varying engineering functions and experience levels, with focus on delivering results, while providing career development, mentorship, and guidance for team growth.

What we can expect from you:

  • Lead team in collaborating with cross-functional partners in generating new concepts, and providing technical and cost assessments
  • Ability to create and impart best practices to effectively support high complexity items, strategic initiatives, and early concept explorations
  • Identify issues, formulate resolution action plans, and execute through to completion with limited oversight– leverage executive leadership and functional partners to gain necessary resources and support.
  • Lead strategic initiatives around operational innovation, efficiencies, or other improvements to significantly impact product development and/or processes.
  • Provide technical direction and guidance, as well as hands-on project management, for all product development from Spin Master East
  • Ensure the optimal application of technology and engineering resources to meet product development/ customer requirements per marketing and design requirements
  • Develop the team of engineers, ensuring proper resourcing for all projects and team development
  • Advise GBUs on blue-sky ideation projects and assist with transitioning them to feasible consumer products
  • Provide mechanical, electronic, and mechatronic engineering expertise
  • Drive productivity/efficiency through continuous improvement and by implementing design for manufacturing/assembly up front

Job Requirements

You should apply if you have the following:

  • Solid understanding of engineering technical issues/needs, financials, sales and marketing as related to product design and development
  • Professional and positive approach, self-motivated, strong drive and ability to build working relationships
  • Experience working with and/or managing creative professionals (designers and engineers) both within and outside the company
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and initiatives in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to employ critical thinking and problem solving techniques to approach any/all issues. If unable to resolve certain issues, can demonstrate a willingness to actively engage other support teams to drive towards resolution.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Proactive and enthusiastic in approaching challenges, with a solution-oriented mindset and uses mature discretion in approaching situations
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers, develop talent, and model professionalism
  • Ability to flex management style based on feedback from teams
  • 10-15+ years of product engineering experience
  • 5+ years of management experience
  • Leadership and management experience in building best-in-class teams, products, and processes
  • Toy, Games, Soft Goods, and/or CPG experience an asset
  • Deep knowledge of manufacturing
  • Demonstrates a "hands-on" team approach to solving problems
  • Track record of driving innovative, cost-effective design solutions
