The Job:

In this role, the Director of Design, Activities (Kinetic Sand, Cool Maker, Etch-A-Sketch etc.) is responsible for overseeing all aspects of design and creation for new and carry forward products. Reporting into the EVP Design and partnering with the VP of Marketing. This position is based in our Head Office in Toronto, Canada.

What we can expect from you:

  • Leading the team of designers and in the creation and execution of all of Spin Master Activities in addition to partnering with vendors and inventors around the world to accomplish business goals and help create the best Activities line in the industry.
  • Lead the invention of new Activity products based on innovation, insight, research, consumer needs, play pattern, play value, quality and safety.
  • Work with Spin Master inventor relations team to evaluate submissions and reach out to the inventor and vendor community to drive for innovation in the category.
  • Be in lock step partnership with the VP of Marketing to sell product concepts both internally at executives internal line reviews and external customer previews.
  • Communicate vision for each new product in visual, verbal and prototype forms
  • Monitor all new product developments to ensure key PD launch dates are achieved and the team are delivering on all aspects of the development process
  • Partner with internal departments (Engineering, Quality Assurance, Marketing, Graphic Design, Sales, Planning, Copy Writing) to insure seamless development of each project.
  • Partner and collaborate with both internal and external design and ID consultants and manage the development costs with all design team members to bring each product in within agreed project budgets and cost targets.
  • Develop and mentor the Activities Design team, increasing the output of innovative thinking and product that will build our Activities offering across the industry.

Job Requirements

Who’s a good fit for this team:

  • Passionate with exceptional leadership, motivational, management, judgement and presentation skills.
  • Must have a strong visual language and communicate effectively to a visually oriented team.
  • High understanding of manufacturing processes hard and soft goods
  • High level of understanding of plastics, compounds and fabrics – along with knowledge of other materials.
  • Has good understanding of costing function and its integration into the design process.
  • High understanding of key areas of our business – marketing, sales, advertising engineering retail, distribution, legal, costing, planning, packaging, packaging and product graphics.
  • A good sense of costing structure and designing to a cost, and Design for Manufacturing.
  • Participation in projects that involve Asia development and interaction.
  • Basic computer skills – (e-mail, basic typing programs)
  • Good design related computer skills – (Solidworks, Photoshop, Illustrator, - also a plus, Rhino, Vellum, 3D studio, AutoCad, Alias, etc.)
  • Very well rounded understanding of things mechanical, electronic, and aesthetic.

You should apply if you have the following:

  • Minimum of 12+ years of experience in consumer product design with direct experience within the Toy business and ideally within Toy Activities category.
  • Experience managing larger multidiscipline design teams and multiple brands simultaneously.
  • Experience working with vendors, sourcing, and manufacturing.
  • Four year design degree in Industrial Design, Fine Arts, Toy Design, or Fashion Design
