The Role:

A Design Director, working with our Advanced Concepts Team will contribute to Spin Master’s strategic innovation pipeline and be responsible for executing the Advanced Concepts Team team’s charter: To deliver successful ideation and the preliminary development of new, competitively advantaged toy products, brands, and/or businesses to drive growth & revenue for Spin Master. This, while supporting corporate strategic goals.

  • To work within a highly creative team to be a catalyst for innovation, creating new product ideas by distilling trends, identifying and leveraging consumer insights, analyzing and interpreting strategic opportunities within the industry, while also leveraging Spin Master’s capabilities and collective insights.
  • Excellence at self-management, pro-activity and the management of multiple projects, while being an expert collaborator within the team.
  • To initiate and participate in follow through with projects once they are turned over.
  • Under the guise of the VP Design & Development/ACT, champion & provide a design “shelter” for the team’s promising new product ideas so that they may grow into potentially disruptive innovation.
  • Management of multiple, highly complex projects to their successful conclusion while being able to respond to fast-tracking development requests in agreement with VP, Design & Development/ACT.
  • Prioritization of one’s time and resources, internal and external, against budget.
  • Partnership with other internal departments (Engineering, Quality Assurance, Legal, Manufacturing, Operations, Sales, etc.) to conduct feasibility analysis on new product ideas to streamline product turnover to GBUs
  • To effectively engage and build relationships across the organization as well as with external partners.
  • Assisting the SVP/ACT in strategic business, financial and creative analysis on new business opportunities as needed to support M&A opportunities and new business ventures.

Job Requirements

  • Someone with exceptional product judgment skills, demonstrated success in new toy invention, new product ideation and development of high complexity and /or tech toys.
  • A skilled creative problem solver that has analytical skills to successfully interpret and apply strategy as set by VP/ACT and/or corporate vision.
  • A highly collaborative individual that embraces ideas and contributions from other team members.
  • A strong presenter & communicator with the ability to clearly articulate and present new ideas and “understand your audience”.
  • Someone with a broad understanding of toy mechanisms, manufacturing processes, age appropriate play patterns, competitive and historic industry awareness.

You should apply if you have the following:

  • Minimum of 5 years and/or very deep experience in Girls/Preschool Toy design & product development within the Toy Industry.
  • Experience managing/supervising at mid-level or above.
  • Proven entrepreneurship, either within or outside a corporate environment.
  • Degree in Industrial Design, Fine Arts (BFA) Toy Design or Engineering (or other equivalent degree education level)
