The Job:

We are seeking an experienced and creative Fabrication Engineer to take a hands-on leadership role in building innovative products, that come to life, and combine elements of puppetry, mechanisms, electronics, materials, structural, and soft goods engineering. Reporting to the Sr. Manager of GPD, this person will primarily be responsible for creating and transforming conceptual designs and key play patterns into proof-of-concepts for internal demonstration and alignment.  In addition to strong technical skills, the ideal candidate will possess expertise in human-robot/toy interaction, UI/UX, gameplay design, and other psychological factors that ultimately lead to products that “surprise and delight” the target consumer.  This role will be responsible for collaborating with a talented team of engineers and model makers to solve complex problems and produce tangible results, while collaborating with integrated product teams to ensure all product, cost, quality, and safety requirements are met. 

 

What we can expect from you:

  • A recognized master in your professional discipline providing mechanical, tinkering, and material engineering expertise throughout prototype development stages for high complexity projects.
  • Help convert ideas/ sketches into proof of concept models; working closely with both in-house and external model shops for proof-of-concept and mechanism development.
  • Participate in product brainstorming and help verify, confirm, and/or correct desired concepts, directions.
  • Lead strategic initiatives around operational innovation, efficiencies, and other improvements.
  • Provide mechanism and component CAD designs which are ready for prototype building and testing iterations with final design for manufacturing in mind (Asia, Mexico, USA, France).
  • Assist in the design and manufacturing CAD development for components and products.
  • Drive productivity and schedule gains by implementing early design successes for less revisions.

Job Requirements

You should apply if you have the following:

  • 10+ years Robotics, Animatronics, and/or Mechanical Engineering experience related to Consumer Products
  • Toy experience an asset. Consumer product experience is a must.
  • BS or MS Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Design, or similar technical experience.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing methods and techniques, e.g. injection molding, roto-molding, machining, fastening methods, bonding, assembly, foam, deco operations…etc.
  • Proficient in Solidworks and/or Creo/Pro-E. Freeform experience and Rhino3D experience an asset.
  • Ability to ideate, create, engineer, and design mechanical assemblies, apparatus, internal and external mechanisms used to create optimum performance across a wide range of toy categories (Robotics, Activities, Remote Control).
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects in different phases of their respective development lifecycle.
  • Ability to transform design illustrations/specifications/briefs along with 2D isometric views to 3D proof-of-concept.
  • Ability to provide strong results based mechanical solutions for effective and efficient product function.
  • Experience working with creative professionals (designers and engineers) both within and outside the company.
  • Experience working with model shops both within and outside the company.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize competing demands.
  • Ability to travel internationally and within North America.
