The Role:

The Design Manager supplies unending passion for creation of new ideas that provide novel and innovative solutions across price points. 

The Design manager is responsible for motivating and mentoring the design team to consistently produce innovative, on-target, on time results. The Design manager helps to prioritize projects and manage work load as well as provide design direction. The person in this role needs excellent communication skills, a proven track record of success, & is ok at encountering obstacles and occasionally failure along the path of creation.

The Design Manager is considered to be a great role model for peers, a mentor for the team and a brand ambassador for the company.

This design position is 50% new brand concept 50% design direction and management of staff. This person often works closely with the Director of design on new brand & toy initiatives, new business pitches and collaborates with Marketing to set creative strategy on key brands and individual items.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to conceptually propose & layout a cohesive line even when starting very little direction
  • Works independently, requires little or no supervision
  • Clearly demonstrates a solid understanding of the IP & related toy categories as well as the competitive landscape
  • Maintain a consistently high level of quality, thoroughness and attention to detail
  • Has excellent problem-solving skills
  • Consistently maintains a positive attitude and is considered a good role model
  • Partner with Sr. Creative Management and Brand Management to set direction for new brands and individual items
  • Delivers innovative results that support brand strategy
  • Work with production team to ensure integrity of design in final deliverables
  • Understands manufacturing and how to keep the magic while lowering the cost
  • Manage the timelines of the projects assigned while interfacing with project management to set priorities, schedules and assign projects
  • Effectively communicate within a multi-disciplinary team over multiple time zones and global locations
  • Solicit creative direction conversation from Director of design to enable actionable & timely solutions
  • Present alongside Brand Management team during Executive reviews, retailer meetings, internal & external partner meetings and trade shows
  • Constantly collaborate with Operations / engineering (local and Asia based) Structural Engineering, Marketing, Quality Control and external Product Development teams as well as any overseas agents, as necessary, in the product development and approval process
  • Maintain knowledge of new trends & technologies within your area of expertise

 Who’s a good fit for this team:

  • Someone with strong interpersonal skills and good time management skills
  • An individual with the ability to adhere to project budgets and deadlines
  • Proven ability to work in a high volume, innovative, and entrepreneurial environment
  • Knowledge of manufacturing Toys including Action Figures, Dolls, Vehicles, Role Play and Playsets is necessary
  • Flexible with changing priorities, and unexpected changes
  • Heightened creative and technical abilities including conceptual drawing, and manual illustration a plus
  • Commitment to direct reports career growth
  • Advanced ability to curate multiple rough concept ideas into strong marketable options

You should apply if you have the following:

  • Minimum 10 years in the consumer products industry; toy design
  • Desire to lead and mentor other creative people
  • Advanced knowledge of Illustrator,
  • A strong sense of design and current understanding of competitive toy
  • Toy Design, Animation, Industrial design, Graphic Design Degree or equivalent related
